Nancy Govea Barajas
Nancy Govea Barajas is a Mexican artist from Bakersfield, California. Her passion for art began at a young age. However, she felt discouraged from pursuing a career in art because of the stigma that she would not be successful in the field. As a result, upon graduating from Arvin High School she chose to pursue a degree in architecture from Cal Poly Pomona. Nancy discovered architecture to be a very competitive and demanding field. During the pandemic, she experienced burnout and decided to take a break from architecture and focus on her studio arts minor. She also discovered Bird Dog Arts as it was about to open and was offered the opportunity to work as a gallery assistant. Being surrounded by art and artists influenced her to rethink her career. She decided to change her major to Visual Communication Design and is currently finishing her final year at Cal Poly Pomona.
“Although it has taken me a while to find the right path for me, I appreciate the journey I have taken and the decisions I’ve made because they have gotten me to where I am today.”
Nancy likes to immerse herself in various media, including drawing, painting, sculpture, photography and digital art. She was a selected artist in the 2D3D+ Juried Student Art Exhibition at the Kellogg University Art Gallery for her sculpture “Untitled/Building Blocks” in 2021 and her drawing “Frog & Turtle Still Life” in 2023. As a future graphic designer, she is interested in branding and packaging design. Most recently she is exploring crochet as an art. You can find her work on Instagram at @nansartstudio
